Specialist trainees spend fifteen months in years three and four based in the Sir Humphry Davy Department of Anaesthesia at the United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust. Some return as seniors in the advanced training years to extend or pursue specialist interests or research. The department provides training and experience in the hospitals of the Trust. These include those listed below.
Bristol Royal Infirmary
Has eight main theatres, covering elective and emergency general, vascular, orthopaedic, cardiac, thoracic, and gastrointestinal surgery. There is a Day Care Unit with two theatres as well as busy Accident and Emergency Department and two Intensive Care Units (general and cardiac). Anaesthesia is provided for radiology procedures, CT and MRI scanning. The Chronic Pain Clinic is expanding with recent Consultant appointments.
St Michael’s Hospital
Has five theatres for obstetrics, gynaecology and ENT work, and will shortly be taking on the breast surgery service. The labour ward sees 4500 deliveries a year, has a 30% epidural rate and is a tertiary referral centre for complex maternal and neonatal cases. The Regional Special Care Baby Unit is situated here and takes babies for neonatal surgery.
Bristol Eye Hospital
- Is a Regional Centre for ophthalmology with four theatres offering training in general and local anaesthesia for paediatric and adult work in its own four theatres.
Bristol Dental Hospital
Bristol Dental Hospital - provides general anaesthesia for paediatric out-patients on a daily basis.
Callington Road
Callington Road - is a Psychiatric Unit where ECT is performed under general anaesthesia.
Bristol Oncology Centre
Bristol Oncology Centre - Anaesthesia is provided here for paediatric and adult oncology work, including treatments and a specialist central venous access service.
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) - is adjacent to the BRI. Training is available in general, regional and day case anaesthesia for children and neonates as well as in the twelve bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), which has its own retrieval service. Surgical specialties in the hospital include cardiac, orthopaedic, urology, ENT, plastic and general surgery.
