The North Bristol NHS Trust has teaching status and is associated with the University of Bristol. The hospital has approximately 1000 beds and supports around 18,500 general and regional anaesthetic procedures per year.  The anaesthetic department is led by 24 Consultants, supported by 1 Staff Grade and 13 Specialist Trainees.

 Specialties

Obstetrics and Gynaecology - The Obstetric unit is one of the largest in the UK with approximately 5000 deliveries, 1100 Caesarean sections and 1500 epidurals annually.

General Surgery

Urology
- Major urological procedures are carried out.

Vascular Surgery and Renal Transplantation
- Major vascular procedures are carried out (elective and urgent).  Over 60 transplants are performed each year plus many vascular access procedures.

ENT and Maxillofacial/ Oral Surgery
-There are excellent facilities for teaching management of the difficult airway, as well as complex head and neck and middle ear surgery.

Orthopaedics
- Elective primary and revision joint replacements are performed in the Avon Orthopaedic Centre along with a wide range of other orthopaedic procedures.  There is good opportunity to gain experience in regional anaesthesia and specific nerve blocks.

ICU - There is a five-bedded ICU which admits about 700 patients a year.  There is a two-bedded HDU next to the ITU.  The Unit is accredited for Intermediate training.
